Kelly's Tools/Modalities

Every counsellor has different tools/methods/modalities that they use to support clients in their therapy journey. Below are the list of the ones that I use most often with short description of what each means.

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): Works on identifying the relationship between thoughts, emotions and behaviours. Also works on identifying unhelpful thought patterns in order to adjusting thoughts and behaviours to shift experiences.

  • Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT): A mind based structured therapy used to treat PTSD.

  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT): Focuses on learning and applying skills to improve emotion regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness and interpersonal relationships.

  • SMART Recovery (Self-Management and Recovery Training): A skill based toolbox used to help you manage behaviours that are interfering negatively with your life.

  • Motivational Interviewing: An avenue to build motivation towards behaviour change.

  • Gottman Level 1: An evidence based couples therapy that focuses on building connection and working on conflict resolution.

  • Gottman Trauma and Infidelity: A process to help the relationship heal and grow after trauma or infidelity.

  • Advanced Emotional Freedom Technique AKA Tapping: A mind body tool that can help with an array of concerns including trauma, anxiety, depression, chronic pain, food cravings, stress and burnout. It involves tapping on acupuncture meridans which helps to activate the rest/digest function in your body as you talk about what is stressful in order to neutralize the stressful response.

  • Narrative Therapy: Talking through concerns in a way that you are able to start to see concerns from a distance in order to make decisions and changes.
